The terrestrial state of a planet is determined by the favorable or unfavorable houses it rules or is located in.
If the planet rules the 6th, 8th, 12th, or 7th house (in terms of open enemies), then such a terrestrial state determines the planet as evil.
If the planet rules all other houses, including the 7th house in terms of love and partnership, then such a state determines the planet as good.

Consonance of the Planet's and House's Nature
It is essential to remember that a planet can be consonant with the house in two ways:
- According to its beneficiary or malevolent nature.
- According to its natural meaning.
For example, Mars and Saturn are natural malefics; they actively promote evil in unfortunate houses. At the same time, Mars is especially effective in the 7th house (conflict), and the 8th house (violent death), and Saturn is especially effective in the 8th, 6th, and 12th as it is the natural ruler of death, diseases, and slavish labor.
The reverse is true for benefic planets. The Sun is especially effective when determined by the 10th house, as it shows glory. Jupiter is especially effective when ruling or in the second, as Jupiter is the natural significator of wealth, and so on.
Dissonance of the Planet's and House's Nature
When the planet's nature is contrary to the house, the planet produces things contrary to the meaning of the house.
So Saturn, whose nature is slavery in the 10th house of success, destroys, denies, or postpones the fame. Similarly, Jupiter, whose nature is mercy, ruling 12th (slavery), rescues from or tempers slavery/imprisonment.
It is valid, all other things being equal. However, the celestial state of a malefic planet can transfer natural malevolence to an accidental beneficiary or neutrality. For more refined effects, see the table in this article on celestial state.
A Planet Determined by Several Houses
It often happens that several houses determine the same planet. So, for example, the planet rules one house and locates in another or rules two places at once.
In this case, we combine the values of the houses, leaving priority to the house where the planet resides because the location is stronger than the rulership.
For example, a malefic planet in the second house in an excellent celestial state portends money with difficulties. If this planet also rules the 7th house, it shows that the funds will come through litigation or the frugality of the spouse rather than through the marriage itself, which usually involves wealth.
The same planet in bad celestial condition will show financial difficulties for the same reason - marriage and lawsuits.
It doesn't necessarily mean that the planet combines the meaning of two houses simultaneously. In one primary direction planet can show money; in another - marriage; in the third - money from the marriage.
The exact principle applies if the planet rules several houses and locates elsewhere. For example, the ruler of the 1st and 8th is Mars in a bad celestial state in the 7th protends the open enemy in connection with a deadly threat to life. It means that the native will be killed or wounded by the enemy. Were this planet Venus in a good celestial state, the above meaning of three houses would hardly take place. So in the primary direction, Venus can show rescue from death by the spouse or the marriage or easy death, but not the wound in a fight.
If Two Terrestrial States are Opposite
Sometimes, the meaning of the planet by rulership contradicts the meaning by location. Therefore, we combine these meanings accordingly and give priority according to logic.
For example, Mars, the ruler of the 8th, is in the 1st house. Mars, as a malefic, is highly effective in ruling the 8th, as said above. It shows violent death. But this is entirely inimical to the life that Mars signifies in the 1st.
We say that Mars promises violent death rather than signifies life.
Additional Determination Through the Aspect From Another Planet
Aspecting Planet is of the Same Meaning
When a planet determined by a house is aspected by another planet whose natural meaning corresponds to the house, it further shapes the determination.
For example, a planet in the 10th house of fame receives a trine from the Sun (the natural significator of fame). It becomes an even more evident significator of fame and success, not just action and undertakings.
Evaluation of aspect's effect is critical in determining the celestial state and action of the planet against the house.
If, for example, Mars-peregrine in the second house, whose natural meaning is opposite to that house, receives a square aspect from Jupiter (a natural ruler of wealth), then such an aspect from the benefic planet is harmless for Mars.
But since the same aspect works in both directions - Mars heavily affects Jupiter, a natural significator of wealth, which has a connection with the second house through its aspect. So Mars-peregrine square Jupiter afflicts money and portends the squandering.
If Venus were in place of Jupiter, the negative impact on wealth from a close square from Mars would be significantly reduced.
Different Meanings of Aspecting Planets
If a planet assigned to a house by position or rulership receives a close aspect from a second planet with no natural similarity to that house, we may look at the terrestrial meaning of the second planet (also by position and rulership). If two houses have a logical relationship, we can take that into account as well.
For instance, if the lord of the 10th aspects planets in the 1st house, it indicates a native inclined to do outstanding deeds.
N.B. We can separately judge the success or failure of these deeds by the 10th house - the planets in it and its ruler.
Similarly, the lord of the 3rd receiving a close square from a detrimental planet in the 10th indicates not just a brother but a brother in close contact with death. The 10th house is the 8th house of a brother.
Additional Determination Through the Disposition
Since any planet expresses itself partially through its dispositor, a planet strongly determined by the house (by position in that house) partially expresses the planets it rules.
For example, the planet in the 10th, a dispositor of the Sun, brings the Sun's nature into the affairs of the 10th house and may additionally signify success (if it coincides with other testimonies). The contrary may occur if the planet rules Saturn, whose nature is inimical to the 10th house.
But if the ruler of the 10th disposes of the Sun, it doesn't bring the Sun's nature to the 10th house.
The same principle applies in the reverse direction. The planet in the house or the ruler of the house partially expresses itself through its dispositor. In the latter case, the ruler's dispositor is called a secondary ruler of the house.
Dispositor shapes both the terrestrial and celestial states of the planet it rules.
- First, we need to estimate the celestial state of the dispositor (as mentioned in the article on celestial state).
- Then, we need to estimate the terrestrial state of that dispositor. We only look at its location in the house - whether in a favorable or unfavorable house - and the logical connection with the current house (where the ruled planet resides).
For example, Saturn in the 8th signifies death, and its dispositor is in the 10th. So death manifests in the background of social activity. It means the native may die while socially active or at the peak of fame (if the celestial state of the dispositor proves it). If the dispositor of death were in the 12th, we would more confidently say that death occurs due to illness since the 8th and 12th are logically connected and have similar malefic natures.
